The Department of Surgery, which includes the Operating Unit, was organized from the very foundation of the Central Institute of Blood Transfusion. Such world-famous Soviet surgeons as S.I. Spasokukotsky, A.N. Bakulev, M.D. Patsiora made a significant contribution to the formation and development of the department.
Currently, the Operating Unit of the NMRC for Hematology is an independent unit that ensures operational work to the following departments:
- scientific and clinical departments of hematological surgery
- scientific and clinical departments of hematological orthopedics
- departments of reconstructive and restorative orthopedics for patients with hemophilia
- scientific and clinical departments of hemodialysis and multiple organ pathology
The main goal of the Operating Unit is to provide full-scale surgical medical care. In order to achieve this goal, the Operating Unit meets the following requirements:
- strict adherence to the principles of asepsis and antisepsis
- rational use of tools and high-tech medical equipment
- maintaining an appropriate level of qualification of medical personnel

The uniqueness of the Operating Unit of the NMRC for Hematology lies in the fact that with a relatively small group of staff and in a small area, a large amount of operational activities, both planned and emergency, are performed in various specialties:
- general and thoracic surgery
- traumatology and orthopedics
- gynecology and obstetrics
- proctology
- urology
- neurosurgery
- transplantology
- dentistry, etc.
In this regard, OR nurses do not specialize in certain types of surgery, each of them is a diverse replacement specialist.
The department employs 8 OR nurses and 4 nurses.
