The Department of Chemotherapy of Hematological Diseases functions as part of the Division of Lymphoproliferative Diseases.
The department opened in December 2012. The purpose of creating this new department of the NMRC for Hematology was to create a multidisciplinary department that allowed treating patients with various diseases of the blood system, both of a tumor and non-tumor nature.
Medical care in the department is provided to patients with various oncohematological and hematological diseases, such as multiple myeloma, various types of acute and chronic leukemia, non-Hodgkin's lymphomas and Hodgkin's lymphoma, myelodysplastic syndrome, aplastic anemia, etc. The department’s priority is the treatment of patients with rare forms of hemoblastoses, with severe concomitant pathology and difficult to diagnose diseases. Particular attention is paid to the treatment of elderly patients.
Treatment uses the latest developments and achievements of medicine, intensive polychemotherapy, treatment with immunomodulatory and targeted drugs, and accompanying therapy to prevent and correct severe complications.
Prior to the creation of the department, all departmental staff spent many years working in various departments of the NMRC for Hematology. They have extensive experience in both clinical and scientific work. All researchers have a Candidate’s degrees, and doctors have the highest medical category.
The main area of research work of the department is the study of leukemogenesis in diseases of the blood system. Scientific analysis of the results of the application of new chemotherapy programs is carried out and the effect of the latest antitumor drugs is studied. In 2013, the department's hematologists defended two Candidate of Medical Sciences dissertations. Scientific work in the department is carried out by researchers and young postgraduate scientists. The employees of the department publish scientific papers, are published in scientific journals, systematically participate and make presentations at symposiums, scientific and practical conferences, congresses both in Russia and abroad.
In addition to scientific and medical activities, the department trains hematologists who are in clinical residency. Currently, the department is training four clinical residents from different regions of Russia and neighboring countries.

Vyacheslav V. Ryzhko - senior researcher, Candidate of Medical Sciences, doctor of the highest qualification category, Associate Professor of the Department of Hematology of the Russian Medical Academy of Continuous Professional Education. In 1976 he graduated from the medical faculty of the Vinnytsia Medical Institute. In 1979, he entered clinical residency and then his postgraduate studies at the Department of Hematology, Russian Medical Academy of Continuous Professional Education, Ministry of Health of the USSR, from which he graduated in 1984. In 1986, he defended his Candidate of Medical Sciences thesis under the guidance of Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Professor A.I. Vorobyov "Development of a method for intensive intermittent plasmapheresis and its use in paraproteinemic hemoblastosis.”
Since 1985 he has been working at the Department of Hematology and Transfusiology of the Russian Medical Academy of Continuous Professional Education of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, initially as an assistant, and since 1991 as an assistant professor of the department. In 1999, he moved to the clinical base of the department at the NMRC for Hematology and worked part-time as a hematologist. Since 2011, he has been working as a senior researcher at the NMRC for Hematology.
He is the author and co-author of more than 200 printed articles and has written chapters in four monographs edited by A. I. Vorobyov and M. A. Volkova. He supervises the medical work of the department, consults severe and complex patients, and conducts a extensive pedagogical activities.
Hunan L. Julhakyan - hematologist, Senior Researcher, Scientific Secretary of the National Medical Research Center for Hematology of the Ministry of Health of Russia, Candidate of Medical Sciences. In 2003 he graduated with honors from the medical faculty of the Yerevan Medical Institute. From 2003-2005 he trained in his clinical residency at the NMRC for Hematology, specializing in hematology. From 2005-2009 he was a postgraduate student. From 2009 to 2012 he worked as a researcher. In 2011 he successfully defended his dissertation "Spleen lymphocytoma (lymphoma from the cells of the marginal zone of the spleen): diagnosis and treatment." Julhakyan has been working in the department since 2012. Since November 2012, he has been the Scientific Secretary of the NMRC for Hematology.
Julhakyan annually participates in Russian and international symposia and congresses with presentations and reports.
He has published 42 papers in scientific hematological journals, 2 chapters in monographs edited by L.D. Grinshpun, A.V. Pivnik and A.I. Vorobyov, A.M. Kremenetskaya. Since 2013, he has been a member of the editorial board of Blood and Cancer Secrets. He has been the Russian representative in SOHO since December 2014.
IslamM. Nakastoev - hematologist, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Head of the Department of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Collection, Processing and Storage of Bone Marrow and (or) Hematopoietic Stem Cells. In 2006 he graduated from the medical faculty of the Yaroslavl State Medical Academy and completed an internship in therapy. From 2007-2009 he trained in clinical residency at the NMRC for Hematology, specializing in hematology. From 2009-2012 he was a postgraduate student. He has been working in the department since 2012. In 2013 he successfully defended his thesis for the degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences: “The effect of pathogen inactivation in platelet concentrate on platelet function.”
Nakastoev has been published in scientific journals and takes an active part in Russian and international scientific forums.
Olga M. Sorokina — hematologist of the highest qualification category. In 1977 she graduated from the medical faculty of the Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University. From 1984-1986, she studied in clinical residency at the Department of Hematology and Transfusiology at the Russian Medical Academy of Continuous Professional Education, Ministry of Health of the USSR, specializing in hematology. Since 1989 she has been working at the NMRC for Hematology. She was awarded the highest qualification category in 1990. Sorokina has been a member of the department since 2012.
She has extensive experience in his specialty and a high level of professionalism. She is a co-author of scientific articles and annually participates in Russian and international scientific symposiums and congresses.
Alexander E. Grachev — hematologist, Candidate of Medical Sciences. In 2007 he graduated from the medical faculty of the Moscow Medical Academy named after I. M. Sechenov. From 2007-2009, he was trained in clinical residency at the NMRC for Hematology, specializing in hematology. From 2009-2012, he was a postgraduate student. Since 2012, he has been working as a hematologist in the department. In 2013 he successfully defended his thesis for the degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences: "The influence of the duration of storage of cryopreserved erythrocytes on their quality and the effectiveness of transfusions."
One area of scientific focus for Grachev is the study of Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia and the development and successful use of new highly effective treatment protocols.
He takes an active part in Russian and international scientific forums. His work is based around both clinical and scientific activities.
